Energy usage in a society is linked with the standards of living and economic growth. India has seen manifold increase in energy production and consumption since independence. However the production of energy has not been able to keep pace with the growing demand of its use. Exceptions apart, energy in form of electricity is in short supply all over the country. Hundreds of villages are not connected with the power grid and a large number of the electrified ones only have a single electricity pole. Currently, India is ranked sixth in terms of primary energy consumption (Commercially traded fuels only) with 3.5% share. On the other hand, India accounts for almost 15% of world population.
The country has heavily depended on conventional sources of energy like coal, oil and gas for producing electricity and in absence of these fuel in large quantity, as a country is import dependent for its energy requirements.
